Upgrading
Upgrading from (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3) -> 2.0
Upgrading from 2.0 -> 2.05
This section will explain how to upgrade emAlbum Standard v2.0 from v1.3 or previous. If this is your first time installing any version of emAlbum, please see the Installation page.
  1. Unzip the contents of emAlbum-v2.0.zip to a folder on your computer.

    You should see two folders:
    - cgi-bin: Contains the emAlbum scripts and configuration files.
    - public_html: Contains your template images and album folders.

  2. Use a text editor to open your emAlbum.cfg file which is located in your cgi-bin/emAlbum folder. This is the main configuration file and will determine the features and function of emAlbum. A detailed explanation of each setting can be found in the Configuration page.

    Troubleshooting:
    - If you are having trouble determining your server path settings, download and install this script.
    - If you need help configuring your emAlbum.cfg file, visit our support forum, we'd be glad to help.

  3. FTP into your web server/host and upload your files.

    Create a new folder in the cgi-bin folder on your server, call it whatever you like. Upload the contents of the unzipped cgi-bin folder into the folder that you just created. Make sure to transfer all of these files in ASCII mode.

    Linux/Unix Servers
    - Set the permissions (chmod) on emAlbum.cgi and emAlbum_setup.cgi to 755 (rwxr-xr-x).
    - If the path to Perl is anything other than #!/usr/bin/perl, edit the first line in both emAlbum.cgi and emAlbum_setup.cgi with the correct path.

    Windows Servers
    - The permissions are usually already set by your host, so you should not need to worry about them.
    - Environmental variables are usually already set up for Perl, so you probably would not need to worry about changing the path to Perl, but it might be a good to edit the first line in both emAlbum.cgi and emAlbum_setup.cgi with the correct path, just in case.

    Upload the contents of the public_html folder anywhere on your web server, but not under the cgi-bin folder. Make sure to transfer all these files (images) in BINARY mode.

    Note: You can change names of the albums, images, or thumbnails folders but you cannot change the name of the emAlbum folder that goes under your cgi-bin folder.

  4. Open your web browser and enter the URL to your emAlbum_setup.cgi file. The setup file will test your settings and inform you if something is not working correctly. If all of the setup tests pass, you will see a link to view your album. Click that link and if everything was setup correctly you should see a Test album. Verify that everything works in the test album.

  5. Now you can begin uploading all of your images to your web server.

    Delete the Test folder and add as many top-level folders as you like. Each top-level folder can have one level of sub-folders. You can have as many sub-folders as you like, but emAlbum does not support sub-sub-folders.

  6. Your emAlbum installation is now complete. emAlbum.cgi can be executed directly, through Server Side Includes (SSI), or by using a DirectoryIndex - read the Configuration page for more details. See the Template Guide page for information on how to customize your template.

    Thumbnails: I recommend using XnView to create your thumbnails. It is a free program that works on Linux and Windows. Read about thumbnails in the User's Guide (coming soon) for more details on how to use XnView.

  7. Upgrading note: If in previous version of emAlbum you used the Album Message feature, the new.gif image will show up when you view your albums. I suggest renaming the new.gif file to new.gif.bak while testing emAlbum v2.0. After completing the upgrade and testing that everything works, you can safely delete the old emAlbum files. (emAlbum.js, emAlbum.css, album.gif, image.gif, index.html, new.gif, and all of the old cgi-bin files)

This section will explain how to upgrade emAlbum Standard v2.05 from v2.0.
  1. Unzip the contents of emAlbum-v2.05-update.zip to a folder on your computer.

  2. FTP into your web server/host and upload your files.

    Replace your existing emAlbum.cgi and emAlbum_setup.cgi files with your new ones.

  3. Open your web browser and enter the URL to your emAlbum_setup.cgi file. The setup file will test your settings and inform you if something is not working correctly. If all of the setup tests pass, you will see a link to view your album. Click that link and if everything was setup correctly you should see your existing albums. Verify that everything works.

  4. Your emAlbum upgrade is now complete.
